We Wander: MIA

You can’t be good at something unless you are willing to be bad – Ryan Reynolds

Whatever happened to your virtual journey around the world? The We Wander blog you were writing with your Mom?

We Wander blog travelled from Germany to France.

Well, we could say that we blew out a tire somewhere between Bordeaux and Barcelona. And, we tried using a high-pressure foot pump, but that only ruined the outsole of my designer shoes. Then, we tried to hitch a ride, but nobody would stop.

Well, at least we have great shoes!

All the above would be virtual, this however is true ...

Life through its mystery and magic has brought twenty kids from an underprivileged community our way. We have observed the children and we have concluded that their circumstances in life have blocked their brilliance.

My centenarian mother in her infinite wisdom, thinks we should take the hidden stars out for a spin into the big world, even if it is virtual.

Taking the children out for a spin in the world could be a good thing.

Something fun that could potentially open their hearts and minds, alter their view of life and with a bit of luck, reveal their true brilliance.

All this is fine and dandy, but what has this got to do with the We Wander blog?

Well, we would like to reconfigure the blog so it will take on twenty new passengers.

We are clear about the intention of the new blog, but we are less clear about how the story will be told.

Whatever the case maybe, our hope is to bring you the wonder of the world through the eyes of twenty young adults.

Unlike most of us, they have never seen the sunset on the other side of the world.

The sunset in Colmar, France.

We Wander: Southeastern France

Colmar is done and dusted and we are now southward bound.

Starting point: Marseille

Destination: Monte Carlo, Monaco

It is a 3-hour, 150 miles (220 km) drive in a northeasterly direction from Marseille to Monte Carlo.

It is a 3-hour drive from Marseille to Monte Carlo, Monaco.

We are riding on the A8, which is a coastal road that hugs the Massif del Esterel mountain range on one side and kisses the Mediterranean on the other.

The A8 runs between the mountains and the sea.

We are driving an Alfred Hitchcock movie classic car, a 1953 Sunbeam Alpine Mk 1. Grace Kelly drove the Sunbeam in the 1955 box office hit, "To catch a Thief".

The Sunbeam Alpine was the car driven in "To Catch a Thief".

The scene that Mom loves the most is the one where Grace Kelly drives the Sunbeam like a banshee out of hell while a white knuckled Cary Grant holds on for dear life.

Grace Kelly and Cary Grant in "To Catch a Thief".

Believe it or not, that car scene was shot in the French Rivera.

"Why are we doddering?"

Also known as the Cote dÁzur, the French Riviera is in southeastern France. Although it does not have a geographical boundary, it is said to start at Toulon in the west and end at Menton near the Italian border.

The Riviera starts at Toulon and ends in Menton.

It is about 550 miles (900 km) long with two million residents and where tourists spend close to $5 billion a year.

The Rivera is incredibly beautiful. It is considered to be the “Gold Coast“ of France.

It is no wonder that budding artists like Picasso, Monet, Cezanne, Matisse came to the French Rivera for inspiration. In fact, it was Paul Cezanne, the Father of Modern Art, who first discovered the Riviera.

Artists like the air and light in the French Riviera.

The French Riviera also drew famous writers such as Scotts Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway. Some of their best works were either written in or based on the Riviera.

Our drive along the coast is unimaginable beautiful.

An aerial view of Nice, considered to be the capital of the French Riviera.

We reverberate to the sounds C'est Magnifique, enjoy the gently tug of the wind on our Grace Kelly driving scarves and take in the azure blueness of the sea twinkling under the mid-day sun.

There are several renditions of Cést Magnifique, but we love the one by Kay Starr the most.

Life is Magnifique.

But, OMG .. there is a big yellow bus racing towards us ..

And, there are twenty little faces with dark brown eyes pressed up against the window panes and they are shaking their fists and yelling at us.

"Are you leaving without us?"

Next, We Wander: North, South, East or West.

As for Grace Kelly’s driving scene, it was horrible. But loved that film too and her beauty and the scenery. Perhaps will watch it tonight for the inspiration.
